On 26th November 2021, the Annual Light the World Christmas Initiative of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was launched in the ancient city of Benin, Edo State, Nigeria. The highlight of the launch was the distribution of food packs to about 100 aged men and women selected from various homes and associations in the state.
Mrs. Dorcas Idehen, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Gender Issues and Social Welfare, who represented the Edo State Government, declared the event open. In her remarks, she said that the State Government was very pleased with the kind gesture of the Church. ‘’The Welfare of the elderly in our state is very dear to the hearth of the state governor. In harmony with this event, the government offered the imposing New Era College hall to host this activity and paid up all her pensioners for the month of November 2021’’. She also urged the wealthy, organisations and churches to emulate the action of the Church by spreading gifts and joy among the poor and needy in our midst.
Sheik Abdulfattah Enabulele, the Chief Imam of the Moslem community in Benin City, in his good will message, commended the Church for the kind gifts to needy elderly in the society. “Who said Christians and Muslims cannot work together?” he asked. ‘’There is the need to promote peace and harmony among the followers of all religions. I will return to my congregation with the good news of a Church like The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.’’
The Light the world Initiative is an invitation to all to transform Christmas into a season of service and love just Jesus Christ did when He was on the earth. This year’s theme is: “Light the World with Love’’. Participants are encouraged to do various acts of service which may include feeding the hungry, comforting the lonely, visiting the sick and afflicted and showing kindness to everyone over the next twenty-five days.
