There are no full-time missionaries in the village of Umuariam, Nigeria, but the missionary spirit is alive and well with the members of the Umuariam Obowo branch. During the month of July, 31 new converts joined The Church, all from the efforts of the branch members.
The baptisms came on two separate days, with 16 people entering the waters on July 13th and 15 on July 20th. This added significantly to the fledgling congregation, which was established in the village for the first time only about a year ago. Under the direction of Branch President Enyi-Ineh Chukwudi Ariam, who was the first Church member of the village and who had previous missionary experience serving as a young Elder in Ghana, the branch members shared the gospel of Jesus Christ with friends and neighbours. As President Ariam noted, “Due to the love of the restored gospel, the Lord is truly hastening His work in Obowo.”
Since its inception, the small branch has been meeting in the family home of President Ariam, but because of the rapid growth of the congregation, The Church has now purchased land for building a meeting house. Regarding the motivation of the faithful members in Umuariam in doing member missionary work, President Ariam shared this thought from Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve: “When we love, share, and invite, we are labouring with the Lord to help each precious soul come unto him.”
The growing branch is part of the Umuahia Nigeria South Stake. The village of Umuariam is an autonomous community within the Local Government Area of Obowo, in Imo State of southern Nigeria.
