The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated an eleven classroom school block, 200 student desks, 24 latrines, and four 10,000 liter water tanks to the GS Gora school located in Cyanzarwe Sector, Rubavu District in Western Rwanda in a handover ceremony held on August 25, 2026. The event included heartfelt expressions of gratitude from local leaders and community members.

The ceremony was attended by government officials, school, church and community leaders, including John Korateng, President of the Rwanda Kigali Mission, Manishimwe Pacifique, Vice Mayor of Rubavu District, Jean Dmascene Sibomana, Parish Priest of Busasamana, Urayeneza Eugene, Rubavu District Education Officer, Sotaire Mwiseneza, President of the Parents’ Committee at GS Gora and Faustin Makuza, Head Teacher at the school.

This initiative was carried out to provide desks for students who previously lacked proper seating, enabling them to study comfortably and improving their academic performance.  It also aimed to promote better sanitation and overall well-being among the students.

On behalf of Church members in Rwanda and worldwide, President Koranteng expressed appreciation for the opportunity to support the school, explaining that the donations come from members’ offerings around the world and he reflected on the greatest commandments—to love God and to love our neighbors.  He also highlighted the importance of acting on that love. He explained that it is difficult for children to focus and learn without proper desks, and that providing them is one way of living the teachings of Jesus Christ. Quoting the Savior’s words about caring for those in need, he compared this effort to giving clothing to those who lack it, emphasizing that such acts of service are expressions of true discipleship.

Vice Mayor, Manishimwe Pacifique expressed sincere appreciation to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for its continued support. She noted her long-standing awareness of the Church and commended its strong commitment to humanitarian and charitable work. She added that such contributions reflect the kind of partnership encouraged by national leadership. She emphasized that, with the donation of desks and the construction of sanitation facilities, it is now the responsibility of the school to take ownership and ensure proper care and use of these resources.
