Church Leaders Minister to Members in Kakuma Branch and Lodwar Group in Kenya  

In Luke 10:1, Jesus Christ commissioned seventy disciples to go forth into every city and place to minister, heal, and share His message. That sacred pattern of service continues today in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

On June 19, 2026, Elder Johnny Badoo, Area Seventy, traveled to Kakuma (town located in Northern Kenya) to minister to a small but faithful group of members. He was accompanied by President Onward Chivunga, Kenya Nairobi West Mission President, and his first counselor, Meshack Odunga. Together, they came not only as leaders, but as humble servants, offering encouragement, compassion, and a shared testimony of hope in Christ.

Over the past year, the Kakuma Branch has grown from just six members to more than 100, a remarkable testament to the power of the gospel and the strength of a united community. While daily life in the camp presents many challenges, the faith of the members shines brightly.

During his visit, Elder Badoo reminded members of the Lord’s constant presence and individual awareness of their lives. “Whenever we meet as brothers and sisters, the Lord is in our presence. God knows each one of us. He knows why we are here, He understands our challenges, and He invites us to live His commandments so we can [draw closer] to Him.”

President Chivunga testified of God’s unconditional love. Referencing John 14:15, he encouraged members to show their love for the Savior through obedience and consistent prayer, emphasizing that a firm foundation in Christ brings strength in times of difficulty.

The visit concluded in Lodwar, where the leaders gathered with a growing group of members. For many, it was their first opportunity to meet an Area Seventy and the Mission President. Their joy and enthusiasm were evident, reflecting deep gratitude and a sincere desire to continue strengthening their faith.

Elder Badoo shared a personal reflection from his own life, recalling his early experiences in 1981 as a young man in Ghana attending a small group of believers. He expressed amazement at how the Church has since grown in his country from humble beginnings. With conviction, he reassured the members in Lodwar,“This is not just me hoping the Church will grow, this is me telling you that it will grow.”

Throughout the visit, a spirit of reverence and unity was deeply felt. Differences in language, nationality, and circumstance faded as members and leaders came together in faith and fellowship. In a world often marked by division, gatherings such as these offer a powerful reminder that even in the most remote and challenging settings, hope can flourish, and faith can endure.
