Stakes and Districts throughout Central Africa responded to the Church’s call to join in the “Light the World” initiative as members came together to serve their local communities. These events were more than just community projects, as one participant stated, “It was a tangible expression of Christlike love, aiming to follow the Savior’s example of ministering to those in need, …and show that faith is put into action through meaningful service”.

This “meaningful service” came in many forms, from ministering to those in prison, as well as orphans and widows in the DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo), to fixing up hospitals and schools in Kenya, members throughout central Africa donated of their time, energy, and means to serve those in need in a spirit of goodwill, unity, and love.

While the Christmas season can often be a time of loneliness and hardship for the most vulnerable members of society, spirits can be lifted and Christ’s love felt as members come together to, “…succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees”, as stated in the Doctrine and Covenants section 81 verse 5.

As Jean Yamapia, 1st Counselor in the Mbuji-Mayi Stake Presidency stated, "In this blessed season when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, we are called to put His teachings into practice: love your neighbor, share with those in need, and be a light to the world."
