Elder Anthony Mua Kaku and Sister Doe Akua Afriyie Awudetsey Kaku, have been called as president and matron of the Accra Ghana Temple. They will succeed President John Kodwo Buah and Sister Augustina A. Buah.
Elder Kaku is an Area Seventy for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Cape Coast and Takoradi areas of Ghana. He has previously served as the Nigeria Port Harcourt Mission leader, stake president, high councilor, and Bishop. He has also served as an ordinance worker in the Accra Ghana Temple. He was born in Nawule, Ghana, to Joseph Ennor–Blay Kaku and Mary Ablemah Arizi.
Sister Kaku is currently a stake Young Women’s president, disability activity leader, and ward temple and family history consultant. She has previously served as mission leader in the Nigeria Port Harcourt Mission, ward Relief Society president, ward Young Women’s president, and temple ordinance worker in the Accra Temple. She was born in Aveyime-Battor, Ghana, to Samuel Awuku Awudetsey and Stella Yaa Norgbodzi.
“Sister Kaku and I are overwhelmed with this call and have been wondering why the Lord called us to serve at this time. We feel inadequate, but we are assured that this is the Lord’s work, and He will do it in His own way, and He will help us all the way,” said Elder Kaku.
“A scripture that comes to my mind at this time is Alma 26:5. I had the opportunity to share this with the Lord’s missionaries that we served with as Mission Leaders. We told them that part of their work as missionaries was to help new converts get to the temple and to receive their own endowments. This gladdens the heart of the Lord, so we must do all that we can to ensure that they get to the Temple,” he added.
On 11 February 2024, members of the Church in Accra celebrated the 20th anniversary of the dedication of the Accra Ghana Temple by President Gordon B. Hinckley and, then apostle, Elder Russell M. Nelson. The Accra temple, the first in West Africa, is now one of ten Temples operation, under construction, or announced in the Africa West Area.
