Church of Jesus Christ Creates New Stake in Kumasi, Ghana

Elder S. Gifford Nielsen presides over the creation of the Ghana Kumasi Ejisu Stake

On 17 March 2024, the Ghana Kumasi Ejisu Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was created.  The Stake is the 144th in the Africa West Area of the Church.  A special stake conference was held at the Kumasi University Stake Center to create the new Stake. 

Presiding at the conference was Elder S. Gifford Nielsen, a General Authority Seventy and President of the Africa West Area of the Church.  He was accompanied by Elder Charles Oide, an Area Seventy from Nigeria.

The new stake was created from existing wards from the Ghana Kumasi University Stake, the Ghana Kumasi Dichemso Stake, and the Ghana Kumasi Suame Stake.  A new Stake Presidency was also called for the Ghana Kumasi University Stake.

President Prosper Mensah, who had previously been President of the Kumasi University Stake, was called as the President of the newly created Ghana Kumasi Ejisu Stake.  Richard Yaw Osei and Humphrey Osei-Mensah were called as his counselors.  Michael Nuamah was called as the new President of the Ghana Kumasi University Stake.  Michael Agyei Brobbey and Kenneth Kofi Osei were called as his counselors.

The Stake Conference was attended by local inter-faith and traditional leaders who were greeted by Elder Nielsen and Elder Oide.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continues to grow in the West Africa Area with three new Stakes being created in March.  Currently there are over 465,000 members of the Church in West Africa, meeting 1,672 congregations.

Members of the Church in the Kumasi area anxiously await the groundbreaking of a new Temple announced on 4 April 2021.
