All rights reserved.On 3 March 2024, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints created a new stake in the Takoradi/Cape Coast area of Ghana. The new Sofokrom Ghana Stake was created during a stake conference in the Mpintsin Stake Center. This newly created stake was drawn from congregations currently in the Mpintsin Ghana Stake and the Takoradi Ghana Stake.
Elder Alfred Kyungu, General Authority Seventy and member of the presidency of the Africa West Area, officiated over the formation of the new stake. He was accompanied by Elder Daniel Kabason, an Area Seventy for the Church in Ghana.
Called as the President of the new Sofokrom Ghana Stake was Wisdom Kwesi Tetteh, previously the Stake President of the Mpintsin Stake. His counselors are President Laud Ato Essel and President John Ankrah.
The new units in the Stake include the Daboase Ward, Essipon Ward, Inchaban Ward, Shama Ward, Sofokrom 1st Ward, Sofokrom 2nd Ward, and the Beposo Branch.
A new Stake Presidency in the Mpintsin Stake was also called during the conference. Phillip Adams was called as president with Ernest Hayford Wilson as first counselor and Micheal Yawson as second counselor.
Attending the conference were local traditional and government leaders. Nana Panyin Yena IV, Chief of Kojokrom and Nana Yadae Kojo IV, Chief of Mpintsin, were both in attendance with their entourages. The traditional leaders were joined by the Honorable Christian Abakah, the assemblyman of Mpentemsrew.

Elder Kabason, who is originally from the Takoradi area, provided a brief history of the Church in the area. “When I was baptized in 1987, we were a very small branch, meeting in a very small building. Look at us now! We are three Stakes” he said. “There is reason to be happy, but we are not finished yet. The Lord is moving his work forward in Takoradi, and we all need to be a part of it.”
The Stake was created by those assigned by the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, noted Elder Kyungu. “Elder Kabason and I were sent here by those who have keys for this important work.”
Elder Kyungu added that,” There were many who were worthy and capable to serve, and we prayed mightily that we would make the right choice. I want you to know that the Lord has chosen, and these are his anointed servants.”
“Promise today that you will love and support your new leaders,” he added. “They will succeed if they have your trust, faith, and prayers.
The Takoradi area holds a special place in the history of the Church in West Africa. The first baptisms in Ghana occurred in December 1978 in Takoradi and Cape Coast, and those pioneers started the first branches in the country. Currently there are 105,000 members of the Church in Ghana, meeting in 370 congregations.
