Church of Jesus Christ Funds Renovation and New Buildings at Orphanage in Liberia

The Gloria Children Home Receives a New Kitchen and Latrine

On 6 October 2023, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held a donation ceremony at the Gloria Children Home in Tiene, Grand Cape Mount County, Liberia.  The Gloria Children Home cares for about 30 orphans and abandoned children. The Orphanage provides schooling, food, shelter, and a lot of love.

The Church funded a renovation and new construction project for the facility which was badly needed. They constructed a new latrine and kitchen with a storage area. All the buildings were rewired and updated with light outlets, receptacles, and light switches. The roof was fixed so that it doesn’t leak anymore, and the damaged ceiling tiles were replaced. A new drainage system was installed around the property.

Due to Civil War and the Ebola crises, there are over 24,000 children in Liberia who have lost both of their parents.  The Gloria Children Home provides schooling, food, shelter, and a lot of love, to these vulnerable children. The humanitarian efforts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints focus on relieving suffering and providing the basic needs of those who cannot provide for themselves.  The Church follows the admonition of Jesus Christ to feed the hungry, take in the stranger, clothe the naked, and minister to the sick and afflicted.

The donation ceremony included the ribbon cutting for the new drainage system, the refurbished water pump and dormitories, and the new kitchen and latrine. In their classroom the children sang, prayed, and welcomed all the guests. The Church was represented by Elder and Sister Trapani, Humanitarian Missionaries serving in Liberia.

“The Church has been with us from the very beginning,” said Kula Dennis, the Director of the Gloria Children Home. “After the Civil War and through the Ebola crises, the Church was there for these children.  I am so grateful that we have maintained this relationship throughout the years.”

Thomas Owen, the contractor in charge of the renovation and building project, spoke to the students and staff saying, “You are now responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of these donations.  You can show your love and your thanks by treating these gifts with respect.”

Sister Trapani shared with the students that, “God has sent the Church to you because He loves you and believes in you.”

After the ceremony Sister Trapani noted that, “The spirit was really strong.  It was an intimate ceremony and we all felt the love of our Heavenly Father.”
