On July 8, 2023 local government, school, and Church leaders celebrated the completion of extensive repairs to the Hill Road Public School in Masaka, Uganda financed and managed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These renovations improved the learning environment for over 1000 students.
This project replaced nearly 200 linear meters (about 650 feet) of leaking asbestos roofing covering 21 classrooms in two separate buildings with durable metal roofing, repaired damaged walls and floors, added a rainwater collection system, and constructed two new latrine facilities.
Many government, school, and Church officials attended the handover event on July 8. These included Masaka Mayor Florence Namayanja, Deputy Mayor Mawanda Achilles, Speaker Ssempijja Toney, City Education Officer Moses Kauma, District Engineer Matovu Muggagga, and school Head Teacher Mr. Benedict Nkata. The Church was represented by Robert Ssekitto, Mande Kainamura, and Henry Kirabo, all members of the Masaka District Presidency.
Discussing the origins of this project, District President Robert Ssekitto said Church members were concerned about the health risks posed by the school’s asbestos roofing. They also wanted the school to be able to collect rainwater.
This is one of many humanitarian projects that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints carries out in Uganda and around the world. Members of the Church show their love for Jesus Christ and their fellow man by contributing to humanitarian projects without regard to religion, race, or nationality.
