Community Celebrates as The Church Provides New Classrooms for School in Malawi

More than 600 learners at Magwero Primary School in Lilongwe District are set to benefit from improved learning conditions following the handover of newly constructed classroom blocks by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 19 June 2026.

The handover ceremony, held at the school grounds, brought together government officials, education stakeholders, community leaders, Church representatives, teachers, parents, students and members of the media, including the Malawi News Agency, to celebrate a project aimed at strengthening access to quality education. The project includes a four-class room block with administrative offices, a two-classroom block, Eighteen ablution facilities for boys and girls, 250 double-seater desks and a water system comprising a borehole, pump, water tank and plumbing infrastructure.

Prior to the project, more than 400 learners were accommodated in a single classroom block, resulting in overcrowding and challenging learning conditions. The new facilities will provide adequate space for learners and eliminate the need for some students to attend classes in shifts.

Speaking during the ceremony, Mr. Laurent Afonso, National Chief Education Inspector in Malawi's Ministry of Education, expressed appreciation for the Church’s contribution to the country's education sector. “This is a significant contribution to Malawi’s efforts to improve education infrastructure and create a conducive learning environment for learners,” Afonso said. He noted that the new facilities would have a lasting impact on the education of children in the area.

“For years, many learners have endured overcrowded and dilapidated classrooms, which negatively affected teaching and learning. These new classrooms provide the space and dignity our children deserve. We are grateful that faith-based organizations are partnering with government to support quality education.”

Mr. Afonso added that improved infrastructure is expected to contribute to higher enrolment and retention rates. “We anticipate a reduction in school dropout rates as more parents are encouraged to enroll their children and ensure they remain in school.”

Mr. Francis Belekanama, Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Msinja South Constituency, called on traditional leaders, parents and teachers to take ownership of the new facilities and ensure they are properly maintained. “This facility belongs to the community, and its longevity depends on our collective effort. Traditional leaders, teachers and parents must work hand in hand to ensure it remains in good condition for future generations.”

Magwero Primary School Headteacher Balakia Mailosi Banda expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the project has transformed both the appearance of the school and the learning environment. “These facilities have significantly improved conditions for both learners and teachers. In addition to creating a better learning environment, the sanitation facilities will contribute to the health and well-being of our students.”

Representing the Church, Brother Vincent Chimtengo explained that the donation reflects the Church’s commitment to following the example of Jesus Christ through service and expanding educational opportunities. "As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we strive to follow the example and teachings of Jesus Christ by serving God's children wherever they may be. Our humanitarian efforts are an expression of His commandment to love one another and care for those in need. Through projects like this, we seek to bless lives, strengthen communities and help individuals reach their God-given potential."

He emphasized that education plays a critical role in personal development, self-reliance and poverty reduction, while helping individuals develop their God-given potential to serve their families, communities and the Lord.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Robin Nankumba said the new classrooms have inspired learners and strengthened their commitment to education.“These new classrooms have brought hope and motivation to us as learners. Having a comfortable place to learn encourages us to attend school regularly and focus on our studies.”

The project reflects the Church’s ongoing humanitarian efforts to care for God's children by improving education, access to clean water and community well-being throughout Africa. Following the example of Jesus Christ, the Church works with governments, community leaders and local organizations to relieve suffering, strengthen families and create opportunities for individuals and communities to thrive. By partnering with local communities, the Church seeks to help create environments where children can learn, grow and prepare for successful futures.
