Homowo, which can be loosely translated as "hooting or jeering at hunger," celebrates thanksgiving for relief from a devastating period of drought and famine suffered by their ancestors in generations past. Besides thanksgiving for hunger relief, it is also a time to focus on peace, unity, and harmony. Residents of the different districts across Accra all celebrate Homowo within their own respective areas, but in acknowledgement of that focus on peace and unity, Nii Abossey Okai called on citizens in his own area as well as across the country to work towards a shared future by setting aside political and social differences.
The Abossey Okai area of Accra is a hub and significant marketplace for trade and commerce in automotive supplies.
