On 18 June 2024, a donation ceremony was held at the EPP Agnissankoi school in Abobo, Cote d’Ivoire to celebrate the donation from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The church renovated three classroom blocks and constructed two sanitation facilities at the school.
Representing the Church at the donation ceremony was Elder Alfred Kyungu, a General Authority Seventy and counselor in the Africa West Area of the Church. Elder Kyungu was accompanied by his wife, Sister Lucie Kyungu and his daughter Bernice.
Receiving the donation and representing the school was Madame Gla Marie, the Regional Director for the Ministry of Education in Cote d’Ivoire. Also attending was a representative of the Mayor of Abobo and the Chief of the Agnissankoi village.
Elder Kyungu noted in his remarks that the Church of Jesus Christ has consistently supported the people of the Abidjan region by funding key projects. “We love your children and recognize that by helping them, we are helping to strengthen your communities. We pray that through this donation today that the residents of this community will be strengthened and uplifted.”
The value of the Church’s donation was recognized by Madame Marie. “You have put smiles on the faces of these children. Through your donation you have provided the opportunity for these children to succeed in their education and to eventually become leaders in our community. God bless you and your blessed members who have donated so generously to these special children.”
Special presentations were made, first by the teachers at the school, and then by the students. The teacher’s representative noted how difficult it was to provide quality education when the facilities were old and dilapidated. “This intervention will not only bless the children but will bring happiness to the teachers and staff as well.”
To show the communities thankfulness to the Church of Jesus Christ, Elder and Sister Kyungu were gifted traditional robes to help them remember the children of Abobo and the great work that the Church had done on their behalf.
At the conclusion of the donation ceremony, the dignitaries joined Elder Kyungu in a ribbon cutting and unveiling of the plaques signifying the donation. Elder and Sister Kyungu were also able to tour the renovated classrooms and visit the new sanitation facilities.
