Elder Ojediran Encourages the Rising Generation in their Studies

In an inspiring Lagos Nigeria Agege Stake devotional held on July 2, 2023, Elder Adeyinka Ojediran, General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints addressed a gathering of students, parents, and educators, urging them to strive for academic excellence and spiritual growth. The special devotional, titled "Succeed in School," emphasized the importance of education in the lives of youth and the role it plays in their personal development.

Elder Ojediran began his address by counseling the Youth. He said, “Always come with your scriptures, notebook and pen whenever you attend a devotional, not just devotional but all meetings.” In acknowledging the challenges faced by students in today's fast-paced world and the ever-increasing academic demands. He empathized with the pressures they experience and encouraged them to remain steadfast in their pursuit of education. He stated, "I understand the trials and tribulations you face in your academic journey, but I assure you that your efforts are not in vain. Education is a vital tool that can open doors of opportunity and enable you to fulfill your potential."

Drawing from his own experiences and the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elder Ojediran stressed the significance of integrating spiritual growth with academic pursuits. He reminded the audience that education encompasses not only the acquisition of knowledge but also the development of character and virtue. "As you seek to excel academically, remember to nourish your spiritual well-being as well. Faith, integrity, and moral values should be the foundation upon which your educational journey is built."  He admonished the audience to always remember three important truths as taught by President Russell M. Nelson that they are 1. Children of God, 2. Children of covenant and 3. Disciples of Jesus Christ. He emphasized that remembering these three identifiers will always guide them in their choices and actions and bring them true success in their lives.

During the devotional, Elder Ojediran shared several insightful quotes from President Russell M. Nelson and remarks, resonating with the attendees:

“My purpose tonight is to make sure that your eyes are wide open to the truth that this life really is the time when you get to decide what kind of life you want to live forever.”

“I believe that if the Lord were speaking to you directly, the first thing He would make sure you understand is your true identity. My dear friends, you are literally spirit children of God.”

Kevin Hallstrom, the Director of Succeed in School (SIS), emphasizes on the purpose of SIS. He said, “the purpose is to help youth to become academically capable learners. He further emphasized to the students that their hands are going to be part of the miracles of becoming disciples of Jesus Christ.

During the devotional, several students who are part of the SIS shared their success stories. One student, Joseph Umoh, expressed his gratitude, saying, "The Succeed in School program has been an inspiration for me. The support and resources I received have helped me improve my grades, gain confidence, and set higher academic goals for myself."

Fayehun, Modupeoluwa added that, SIS has helped her to overcome her mathematical challenges in school and has helped her to have a vision of what she wants to become in the future.

Another student, Olufolaji, Itunuoluwa Elizabeth, spoke about the positive impact of mentorship on her educational journey. She said, "Having leaders through the Succeed in School program has been invaluable. They have provided guidance, encouragement, and have helped me navigate the challenges I face in school. I feel more motivated and empowered to excel."

Local educators and community leaders also commended the Succeed in School program for its commitment to educational excellence. Sister Mary Ofor expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "This program has provided our students with invaluable resources and opportunities to succeed. We have witnessed firsthand the positive impact it has had on their academic performance and overall well-being."

The Succeed in School program plans to expand its reach and impact in the coming months, with a goal to empower even more students in their educational journey. Through collaboration and dedication, this initiative seeks to create a brighter future by unlocking the full potential of students, one individual at a time.

Elder Adeyinka Ojediran concluded his remarks by emphasizing four basic principles that would lead to conversion and academic excellence, he said, knowledge, agency, obedience and intelligence premised on the doctrine of Christ lead to conversion in the Lord Jesus Christ, and as you put these things together, I testify to you that the Lord would be your strength, would be your help, and would guide you and you would not only accomplish great things here on earth but also in the world to come.”

The devotional was an enlightening and motivating event, leaving attendees inspired to pursue both academic excellence and spiritual growth.
