Twenty-two missionary candidates for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came to the Kinshasa Stake Center during May 22-23, 2023 for free comprehensive physicals. A total of 165 prospective missionaries from all 11 of the stakes in the Kinshasa region are expected to take advantage of this program in the coming weeks. This event was made possible by medical staff members of the Medicalys Hospital in Kinshasa, who donated their services for free.
The Medicalys Hospital, owned by returned missionaries, has been giving physicals to missionaries for years, but many candidates were unable to pay for the required examinations and lab work that cost up to $120 USD. This is a large financial burden for most families in DR Congo.
One of the doctors remarked, “We expect to help about 165 missionary candidates or an average of 15 candidates per stake, and then we can see how to expand this campaign to other cities in the country.”
Currently there are about 92,000 full time missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving around the world. They are called by God to serve in their assigned fields of labor. All pay their own expenses, either from money they have saved prior to their missions, family contributions, or donations from other Church members. Their main purpose is to bring souls to Christ.
