Thursday, August 8, 2024 was an eventful day for the Ghana Missionary Training Centre in Accra, Ghana, as it welcomed its first ever sister missionary from The Gambia. Sister Sunkar Yuffa, from Sukuta, The Gambia, reported for missionary service to labor in the Nigeria Calabar mission.
Sister Yuffa is the oldest of 9 children. The 19 year old is a recent convert to The Church, having been baptised only about 2 ½ years ago. Her branch, which was formed only a few years ago now has a membership of about 93, is the only branch of The Church in The Gambia. Her father serves as the elders quorum president in their branch, while her mother was baptised just 11 days prior to Sister Yaffa’s entry into the MTC.

Prior to her call, Sister Yuffa served as a primary teacher in her branch, teaching 14 children from ages 1 ½ years to 6 years old. She has also been active in the Young Single Adults program in her branch, attending meetings every Saturday. Over the last several months, she has also been working with the senior missionaries who were teaching her Gospel Literacy and Preach My Gospel. She also focused on reading the Book of Mormon and she has developed a strong testimony of its truth, along with a firm testimony of the prophets and of the gospel of Jesus Christ. When asked why she wanted to serve a mission, her sincere response was, “because it’s the right thing to do.”
Her friends, mostly Muslim, don’t understand why she is serving a mission and they make fun of her, telling her she’s becoming a “holy, holy sister.” Her younger siblings are sad, knowing that she’s not going to be around for a while, and her mother is missing her already. But Sister Yuffa is committed to serving the Lord, explaining that “my example will help.”
