Flood Victims in Kpando, Ghana Receive Emergency Relief Supplies from Church of Jesus Christ

Spillage from Kpong Dam displaces thousands of residents

On 16 November 2023, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints presented relief items to the flood-stricken Kpando and North-Dayi district assemblies in the Volta Region of Ghana. The presentation was held at the Kpando Municipal Assembly room and was attended by numerous municipal, traditional, and church leaders.

The recent spillage from the Kpong Dam has caused a significant rise in the Volta River and has displaced thousands of residents in these communities. Others have lost their farms and their ability to trade.

“The situation is very bad, people were left with only the clothes that they wore,” said Municipal Chief Executive Geoffery Kodgu Badasu. “We gave what we could, but it was not nearly enough.”

The municipality contacted the Church through President Emil Senyo Wordy of the Kpando Branch of the Church.  President Wordy, who is also the Deputy Director of the Kpando Municipality, connected them with the Welfare and Human Services of the Church in the Africa West Area.  Within days the relief supplies began to arrive.

“You have put smiles on the faces of those who had lost everything and had no reason to hope,” said Chief Executive Badasu. “We appealed for assistance, and our pleas were heard. On behalf of all our community and traditional leaders, we thank you for your Christian giving.” The donation included food, mattresses, blankets, and sanitation supplies.

The North-Dayi District of the Municipality was particularly hard hit.  “You came to us in our moment of greatest grief and despair,” said North-Dayi District Chief Executive Kudzo Attah. “The people from this community have always seen your people in their white shirts, but now they have seen a practical example of the teachings of Christ.  Your Church is not just words, but a true blessing to our affected community.”

The traditional leaders showing support by attending the donation ceremony were Mama Komlateng II, Queen Mother of the Kpando Aloyi, and Mama Elewodzro IV, Queen Mother of the Kpando Gadza.  Also attending was Togbui Amanu V, from the Kpando Tsakpe, who represented the Paramount Chief.

Alongside President Wordy, representing the Church was President Savior Dorvlo of the Ho District Presidency, and Elder Curtis Clouse, of the Accra Ghana Mission Presidency.  Also attending was Henry Adu, a member of the Church and an official with the North-Dayi District, and Wisdom Belly, Executive Secretary of the Ho District of the Church.

“The love we have for your communities is a reflection of our desire to show love to God and to all of our neighbors,” said President Dorvlo.  “We are here to support you.  If you want to learn more about this love of God and of our fellow man, please reach out to our missionaries.  They are anxious to share this message with you.”

Elder Clouse stated that,” What we have seen here is how a church and a community can come together to bless the lives of their people.”  He added that, “we know that you love your people and want to alleviate their suffering.  Christ is pleased when we choose to help each other, and he is pleased with what we have done together today.”

The Volta Region is tucked into the Southeastern corner of Ghana, with the Country of Togo to the East and the Atlantic Ocean to the South.
