Relief Society from the Gambia Joins Muslim Women's Group in Community Service

Church Works with "Dynamic Sisters" and Municipal Leaders on Clean-up Project in Kanifing, the Gambia

Just over a year ago on February 24, 2022, Elder D. Todd Christofferson walked towards a beach in Gambia at dawn, by the light of a flashlight.  He was there to dedicate the country of the Gambia for the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was then officially recognized in the Gambia. “As the sun begins to rise now, we see this as a new dawning for Gambia.  Not just a new day, but truly a new era,” said Elder Christofferson of this historic event.  During his visit, Elder Christofferson witnessed the baptism of 11 new members of the Church, nearly doubling the number of members in the country.

From this beginning, the Banjul Branch in the Gambia has continued to grow, now with nearly 50 members.  These saints have worked with community leaders and inter-faith groups to become an integral part of their community.

On Saturday, 18th March, 2023, the Banjul Branch Relief Society, as part of the activities commemorating the Relief Society 181st Anniversary organized an Environmental Cleaning Exercise in the Kanifing Municipality in collaboration with "Dynamic Sisters", a Muslim Women Group and the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC). The Deputy Mayor of Kanifing of the Kanifing Municipal Council- Mrs Binta  Janneh, accompanied by the Environmental and Sanitation Officer of the KMC, Mr Bolong and the Project Manager of KMC, Mr Lamin Sanyang and other members of the KMC participated in the exercise.

"This is women supporting women, and together we can help to make a brighter future for the Gambia, our homeland," said the Public Relations Officer of the Dynamic Sisters, Mbolleh Moi Dolleh.  She added that, "even though we are of different faiths, we can meet together, friendship together, and work together as Sisters."

After the cleaning exercise, branch members provided transportation for all participants to gather at the meetinghouse for refreshment and familiarization. They worked to strengthen bonds of friendship for future collaboration on other meaningful, fulfilling exercises and activities.
