On Friday, January 17, 2025, the Kwesimintim Government Hospital in the Western Region of Ghana received a generous donation of vital medical equipment from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The medical superintendent, Dr. Simon Osei Frimpong, received the items on behalf of the hospital.
The Church's donation provided equipment essential to improving maternal and neo-natal intensive care at the facility, including anesthesia machines, phototherapy machines, fetal doppler machines, an autoclave, radiant warmers, and more. The hospital averages 165 deliveries per month, including an average of 50 caesarean sections. Approximately 40 babies each month require neo-natal intensive care. The Church's donation will significantly improve care for delivering mothers and their newborns.
In his address, Dr. Frimpong shared that in 2023, the hospital faced significant challenges in acquiring modern medical equipment and reached out to the Church for assistance. By 2024, two delegations from the Church visited the hospital to assess its specific needs. On October 2, 2024, the Church delivered the requested equipment, many of which are already in use, significantly enhancing the hospital's ability to provide high-quality care, particularly in maternal and neonatal care, surgery, and infection control.
During the donation event, President Jacob Helland, president of the Ghana Takoradi Mission, expressed his gratitude, saying, "Friends and neighbours, brothers and sisters, we are honoured to associate with you today. During the cholera outbreak, we received vaccinations here and were treated with professionalism. As a Church, we follow the Savior’s teachings in Matthew 25: 'Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.' These medical items have been made possible through the generous donations of our members from around the world, who contribute a tenth of their earnings in tithes."

The Honorable Fiifi Buckman, Member of Parliament for Effia-Kwesimintsim, shared his personal experiences with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints during the donation ceremony, commending its unwavering commitment to community development. He described the Church as "heaven on earth," emphasizing that its mission is deeply rooted in promoting humanity and compassion. "The Church's actions reflect its core essence of uplifting humanity through selfless service and meaningful contributions," he noted.
Madam Joyce Bagyna, Municipal Director of Health, highlighted the Church’s unique funding model, saying: “These contributions come from individual Church members, not from business ventures. It’s impressive and sets a standard that other partners can emulate. It would have been difficult, if not impossible, for the hospital to mobilize the funds for this equipment. We are deeply grateful and pray for God’s blessings upon the Church and its members, who act out of compassion and emulate Christ through action, not just words."
Mr. Jeremiah Tiimob, Deputy Director of Administration at the Regional Health Directorate, assured the gathering that the equipment would be properly maintained to ensure its durability. He also acknowledged other Church contributions to healthcare facilities across the region, including support for the emergency unit of Takoradi Hospital.
During the event, various departmental heads at Kwesimintim Hospital shared their experiences using the donated equipment. They expressed appreciation for how the tools have improved healthcare delivery in their respective units.
The event was attended by several dignitaries and Church representatives, including Elder and Sister Ostler from Area Welfare Services, President and Sister Helland from the Takoradi Mission, President Samuel Oppong, Takoradi Stake President, Brother Patrick Dzebu, Stake Communication Director, Brother Aom Acheampong, Assistant Communication Director, and Akua A. Asante-Asare, Communications Director for the Cape Coast Coordinating Council.
On behalf of its staff and patients, the hospital expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for its generosity and ongoing commitment to improving healthcare in the region.
