After a latrine block collapse at Catholic Nyabondo Boys’ Secondary School in February 2022 that killed one student and injured several others, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stepped in to build new, safe facilities at the school. The rebuild project was handed off last Wednesday.

President Obiero, the local District President in Nyabondo, Kenya, along with LDS senior missionaries and local Church leaders, presented the Church’s efforts to alleviate the emergency sanitation situation. The Church constructed two new latrine blocks, each with 12 stalls. The blocks replace the previous 24 stalls which had been condemned by the county government health department. The parents of Nyabondo students and local community and educational leaders were also present.
“We want to thank you greatly, for coming to our aid to ensure that our boys are now back in school with the facilities that they need,” said Jactone Gangre, sub-County Director of Education. He states, “Pass this message to other saints that as a ministry of the government, we really appreciate this support.”
Judith Omune, Nyabondo Area Chief, also expressed her gratitude, “I want to thank God for working through President and Sister Denis Obiero, who linked us to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Now we are here celebrating the new toilets built for us, we cannot take that for granted.”
Church members worldwide strive to follow the example of Jesus Christ in serving those in need.
Speaking at the hand-over ceremony, President Obiero extended a Christlike invitation to those who would attend the secondary school: “Remember to serve.”
