Twenty-three members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from throughout Central Africa visited the Miale ya Tumaini (Rays of Hope) orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya, on 18 November 2023.
The Church members, from Cameroon, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, Canada and USA, donated much-needed food and supplies to the orphanage. These included flour, beans, cooking oil, salt, sugar, soap, detergent, diapers, and books.
The visitors also played games with the children, who regaled them with songs, dance, and poetry recitations. There were few dry eyes when the time came to reluctantly say goodbye to the roughly 90 orphans and their angelic staff.
Orphanage founder Diana Wambui Ngungi said, “I thank God for an amazing afternoon. We feel your love. We are blessed to have you here. Our joy today is immeasurable.” Orphanage manager Bernice Warimu Ngugu said, “We had a great time. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity. May God bless you.” Orphanage counselor George Wameru added, “Visits such as yours bring hope and joy to the children because it helps them remember that people out there really care about them.”
