Karu, a satellite town of Abuja, Nigeria, on Tuesday 20th December, 2022 played host to a Light The World event of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The event which took place at the palace of the Esu Karu of Karu Kingdom, saw the donation of food items to 200 needy families of the community by the Church to help brighten their Christmas celebrations.
Elder I. Raymond Egbo, an Area 70 in the Africa West Area of the Church who led the Church delegation, thanked the Esu Karu for providing his palace grounds to host the event. He told his royal highness that ‘’ the Light the World initiative of the Church provides members of the Church and her friends the opportunity to bless the lives of others through acts of service just like The Light of the World Himself, Jesus Christ did while on earth’’. He promised future collaborations with the Kingdom.
Welcoming the delegation, the Esu Karu of Karu Kingdom HRH. Luka Panya Baba, a retired Pharmacist, thanked the Church for choosing his kingdom for the Light The World programme. ‘I am particularly impressed by the category of persons that you have chosen to receive these food items. My people are grateful, and we look forward to collaborating with the Church in future for programmes that would help alleviate the hardships that my people face’.
Prior to the date of the event, Victor C. Eze, president of the Abuja Nigeria Wuse Stake, under whose ecclesiastical area Karu Kingdom falls, along with the other two Stake Presidents in the Abuja area worked with the Karu Place Chiefs to identify 200 needy members of the community whose lives would be blessed by the food donation. Everyone on the list received a package consisting of rice, beans, noodles, vegetable oil, tomato paste, seasoning cubes, beverages and a live fowl.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Maikasuwa Magaji, who is physically challenged, thanked the Church for the donation. He stated that: ‘This is the best food donation we have received from any organization’; to which the other beneficiaries shouted in affirmation. The major highlight for each beneficiary was being able to walk home with a live fowl for their Christmas celeberations.
