On 14 March 2023, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated much needed medical equipment to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and Oak Hospital in Cape Coast Ghana. Dr Kwasi Agyen-Mensah, Head of Surgery, in accepting the donation said, “this equipment will significantly improve the hospital’s surgical operations with increased success rates.”
At a ceremony at the Hospital, Dr Agyen Mensah and Dr Stephen Laryea, the Medical Director, expressed their gratitude for the generous donation. They noted that for a long time, surgeons at the hospital have had to improvise certain instruments and equipment because they lacked the right resources. “Fortunately for us, when we put in the request, the Church responded quickly,” Agyen-Mensah said.
The items donated included mesher and dermatone for the plastic surgery unit, and a thoracotomy set for the trauma and general surgery unit. Pulse oximeters and defibrillators were provided for the newly established High Dependency Unit (HDU), and saws, drills, and other instruments will supply the orthopedic, neurosurgery, and urology units. “And so now, we have the full set of equipment and items to start the HDU’s for the first time in this hospital,” said Dr Agyen-Mensah.
Representing the Church were Elder Anthony Kaku, Area Seventy in the Cape Coast area, and President Christopher Morgan and Sister Christine Morgan, the mission leaders for the Cape Coast Ghana mission.
This donation was made possible by the donations of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout the world. The Church has provided donations of over $32 million US for projects like this throughout Ghana.
