On 26 November 2023 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints created a new Stake in the Africa West Area. The newly organized Ondo Nigeria Stake became the 140th Stake of the Church in West Africa.
Presiding over the creation of the Ondo Nigeria Stake was Elder Jörg Klebingat, a General Authority Seventy and first counselor in the Africa West Area of the Church. He was joined by Elder Anthony M. Kaku, who is an Area Seventy of the Church from Ghana.
The new Ondo Nigeria Stake was created from the Ondo District of the Church. The Ondo District was part of the Ibadan Mission. Ondo is in the southern part of Nigeria.
Called as the President of the new stake was Richard Lasisi Olagunju. Called as first counselor was President Uche Esoleonu Okoh and President Toluwatope Akinbodunse as second counselor.
The new stake is the sixth created in the Africa West Area in 2023 and reflects the incredible growth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the area. Nigeria now has 225,000 members of the Church with nearly 800 congregations. Nigeria has a Temple in Aba, and new temples have been announced for Lagos, Benin City, and Calabar.
