Open House Celebration for New Stake Center in Port Harcourt, Nigeria

On 18 May 2024, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Choba, Rivers State, Nigeria, held an open house ceremony to unveil the recently constructed Port Harcourt Nigeria Choba Stake Center.  The new building located in Choba, will provide a meeting place for Choba Ward first and second wards. The Choba Stake currently has nine wards and five branches.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Elder Sancho Chukwu, an Area Seventy of the Church serving the leaders and members in the Port Harcourt area. Traditional Leaders and other key opinion leaders attended the ceremony, as well as local media. They were joined by members of the Port Harcourt Nigeria Choba Stake and many friends from throughout the community.

The ceremony, which had about 700 people in attendance, provided guests with a tour of the building. The guests were introduced to self-reliance programs, the Seminary and Institute program, activities of the Gathering places, missionary work, the family history office, and genealogy services. Guests were excited to hear of the Church’s commitment to providing affordable university degrees through BYU Pathway programs and indicated willingness to register.

The Community Traditional leader, Chief John Emenike, expressed profound gratitude to the Church and urged the youth to embrace all that the church has provided for them in the educational sector and to be self-reliant.  He lauded the Church for its huge investment in humanitarian projects.

The Stake choir, adorned in indigenous attire, treated the guests to special musical renditions.

In his closing remarks, Elder Sancho Chukwu admonished all to nurture their faith in Jesus Christ and love one another as children of God. He concluded by admonishing that as leaders and saints, we should think about the people that the Lord has entrusted in our care.
