On Monday, September 23, 2024, the Takoradi Ghana Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in collaboration with the Takoradi Regional Hospital, organized a health screening at the stake centre. The screening was free of charge to residents of the community as well as to members of the Church.
Notable health professionals attended the event, including Dr. George Peprah, Medical Superintendent of the Takoradi Regional Hospital, and Felix Osei Kesse, the Hospital Administrator. They were joined by two senior nursing officers, a senior staff nurse, a principal enrolled nurse, and a rotational nurse, all who assisted in conducting the screenings. One of those nurses, when asked why she was willing to participate in the event, referenced the recently renovated accident and emergency unit and the donations of medical equipment provided by the Church to the hospital. She responded, “You people have given us a lot. This is the least we can do.”
The tests offered included electrocardiograms (ECG), echocardiograms, and checks of vital signs such as blood pressure, blood sugar levels, weight, height, abdominal girth, and pulse rate monitoring. Recipients of these screenings were grateful. Sister Juliet Mensah, a member of the stake, remarked, “We are blessed to get these medical examinations for free. These tests would have cost a fortune.”

President Emmanuel Botwe, first counsellor in the stake presidency, expressed his gratitude for the medical professionals participating in the event. Despite the day being a national holiday, the medical staff were willing to give up their personal time to conduct the screenings. President Botwe noted, “To get a whole medical director of a hospital personally come to run these tests for us is great. Ordinarily he would have delegated others, looking at how tight his schedules are and today being a holiday.”
The blessings from keeping the Word of Wisdom and generally clean living were evident throughout the screening. Dr. Peprah, commenting on what he was seeing, noted that “the members keep themselves well. Almost everyone we have attended to is healthy.” The Church and Hospital look forward to continued collaboration in addressing both the spiritual and physical needs of the Takoradi community.
