The Church Donates Mental Health Facility to Regional Hospital

"This is more than humane, this is Godly."

The Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital in the Central Region of Ghana celebrated the donation of a newly constructed mental health facility on December 12, 2024. The donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the hospital provides mental health staff at the hospital with a new building and much needed equipment, including hospital beds, office tables and chairs, a medical refrigerator, vital sign equipment and more.

The hospital in Winneba previously had a small area dedicated to mental health care. However, with the increase in population in the area over the last few years, the number of patients continued to rise until the previous facility could no longer serve the community’s needs. The services offered by the old clinic, including care for behavioural disorders, substance abuse, psychosis, dementia, depression, mental retardation, and other conditions, were at risk. The hospital requested assistance from the Church, which responded by constructing a new building exclusively dedicated to mental health services, and by furnishing it with essential treatment, administrative, and diagnostic tools and equipment.

Elder Isaac K. Morrison, second counsellor in the Africa West Area presidency, presided at the event and opened the ceremony with his remarks.

“As we gather here today, we are not just inaugurating a new facility, we are bearing witness to the Saviour’s love and concern for the mental and emotional well-being of His children. This psychiatry unit is a tangible representation of the Church’s commitment to exemplify the Saviour’s love and to provide hope, comfort, and healing for those who are struggling,” he said.

In accepting the donated facility, the Regional Director of Health Services expressed her gratitude saying, “On behalf of the Director General of the Ghana Health Services, the Regional Health Director, and the Minister Health Directorates we say a very big thank you to the Latter-day Saints Church ... This is more than humane, this is also godly.”

She committed to maintaining the facility in good condition and expressed hope that the Church’s involvement with this project was the beginning of a strong ongoing relationship between the Church and the Hospital.

The  Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital is a government-run facility that serves as a referral point for other health facilities and hospitals in the region. It serves as the main mental health facility within the area.
