Member of Parliament and Local Traditional Chief attend donation ceremony

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated modern bathroom facilities and mechanized water systems to four communities in the Atwima Kwanyoma District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana.  On 8 December 2023, donation events were held in the four beneficiary communities to celebrate handing over the projects to community leaders.

Representing the Church at the donation celebrations were Elder Kofi G. Sosu, an Area Seventy of the Church in the Kumasi area of Ghana, President Samuel Appiah of the Kumasi Ghana Bantama Stake, Bishop Yaw Ampomah of the Kwadaso Agric Ward, and other local church leaders.

The donation events were attended by many community leaders, traditional leaders, and school children from the beneficiary communities.  The Akyueremade DA Basic School received a 20-seater modern toilet facility.  The Trabuom RC Basic School received a 10-seater modern toilet facility and a complete mechanized water system for their community.  The Basic School in Nnweneso received a 12-seater toilet facility as well as a 6-seater for the kindergarten.  In Deikrom, the community received a 20-seater modern toilet facility.

Accepting the donations on behalf of the community were Honorable Kofi Amankwaa Manu, Member of Parliament and the Deputy Minister of Defense, and Nana Obeng Mensah, the traditional Chief of Trabuom.

With tear filled eyes, the Honorable Member of Parliament Manu expressed gratitude to the church on behalf of his constituents for the toilet facility. “This is not the first time that your Church has blessed the members of this community.  We promise today to take care of these facilities to honor your generosity and love for the people.”

The Chief thanked the Church and all the stakeholders involved with the donation. “I commend your church and recommend it to all my people.  There are great things to learn from your church and the generous way you help our community.”

Elder Sosu introduced the church to the people and stated the reason for the Church’s humanitarian services. “We are taught to love our neighbor, as the Lord taught mankind,” he said.  We render these services devoid of any discriminations because we are all children of the same Heavenly Father.”

President Appiah reminded the event attendees of how these projects are funded. “The donation of these facilities is a result of the sacrifice and fasting of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout the world who contribute to bless the lives of their fellow men,” he said, and then admonished the schoolchildren to take good care of these facilities to show their gratitude for the gift.

The donation events were also attended by many local government and education leaders.  Emmanuel Addo-Ashanti, Regional Director of Health Services, Eunice Kwakyi, the District Chief Executive, and Assemblywoman Philip Frimpong, all took the opportunity to thank the Church for the donations and pledged to maintain them with care.

The Ashanti Region is in southern Ghana with Kumasi as it’s capital.  The Church of Jesus Christ has seen significant growth in this area with six Stakes having been established. On 4 April 2021, the Kumasi Ghana Temple was announced.  A site for the Temple has been identified and the local member anxiously await the groundbreaking in the coming months.
