Members of the Relief Society (women’s organization) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Takoradi Ghana Stake have donated assorted toiletries and hygiene kits to inmates of the Sekondi Female Prison. The presentation, which took place on Saturday, 25 April, was made during a brief ceremony at the forecourt of the female prison at Sekondi in the Western Region.

All rights reserved.Making the presentation, Sister Adelaide Arthur, a counselor in the Takoradi Stake Relief Society presidency, said the donation formed part of the anniversary celebration of the Church’s Relief Society, observed on 17 March. She explained that the effort was aimed at supporting their sisters in prison, as Christ would.
The items were received by Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP) Justina N. A. Woode, assisted by ASP Doris Addo.
On behalf of the officer-in-charge, Chief Superintendent of Prisons (CSP) Genevieve Hagan, and the inmates, ASP Woode expressed gratitude to the Relief Society and the Church and invoked God’s blessings upon the donors.
In a short address, President Emmanuel Botwe, First Counselor in the Takoradi Ghana Stake Presidency who accompanied the sisters, explained that the gesture was the Society’s “widow’s mite” to help meet the needs of the inmates. Quoting James 1:27, President Botwe emphasized the importance of relieving the afflictions of the vulnerable. He noted that the Lord knows and remembers all His children, regardless of their circumstances. He encouraged the inmates to let their light shine even in their present condition and to take advantage of the training they are receiving from prison officers so they can leave transformed and reformed.
The items donated included several packs of sanitary pads, toilet rolls, bar and cake soaps, medicated soaps, toothbrushes, toothpastes, several gallons of liquid soap and assorted sanitary items.
The Relief Society is the women’s organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Established on 17 March 1842 under the direction of the Prophet Joseph Smith, it is one of the oldest and largest women’s organizations in the world. The Relief Society seeks to strengthen faith in Jesus Christ, build unity among women, and provide relief to those in need through compassionate service, self-reliance, and humanitarian efforts in communities worldwide.
