Church Provides Relief to War Refugees in Eastern DR Congo

“Thanks to the support my family received, my children have been able to enjoy some hot meals.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints partnered with NGO and government officials to donate critical food and supplies to more than 19,000 refugees in Rwanguba, Rutshuru Territory, North Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo in January 2023.

A total of 3,278 needy families were given bulk quantities of maize flour, beans, rice, salt, cooking oil, sleeping mats, blankets, and fabric for clothing. The Church cooperated with the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD), Société Cooperative Agricole du Congo (SOCOAC), and refugee camp and local government officials to assess needs, acquire supplies, and manage the distribution.

Distribution of the food and supplies took place at the Munigi Catholic Community Center during 10 to 13 January 2023.

A 35-year-old mother of five said, “thanks to the support my family received, my children have been able to enjoy some hot meals for the last week. We will manage this ration so that it covers at least two months. In the morning, the children take porridge thanks to the corn flour that we received; at lunch time we prepare some beans and rice, which is what we also consume in the evening. Thank you very much to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to CAFOD and to SOCOAC for this assistance to relieve our suffering because it is the first that we have received.”

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints around the world contribute generously to humanitarian projects to follow Jesus Christ’s example to care for the poor without regard to religion, race, or nationality. The Church partners with many global organizations, both public and private, to carry out this work.
