On August 5th, 2025, Her Excellency Honorable Wavinya Ndeti, Governor of Machakos County, and members of her staff graciously welcomed Elder George Munene, Area Seventy, and members of the area communication team, to the Governor’s private office. This meeting marks, what is hoped to be, the beginning of a lasting partnership between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and the Governor and her staff.

Elder Munene began the discussion by inviting Governor Wavinya Ndeti to join in the National Trees for Food project, currently under way throughout areas of Kenya.  This project is a partnership between local County governments and The Church, wherein The Church provides seedlings of mango, orange, and avocado trees to furnish sustenance and food security to communities, in addition to, as Elder Munene stated, “empowerment… because they also provide a form of livelihood for the people”.

Elder Munene also expressed the desire to “partner together in many other programs and projects” in the future and to help them “understand who we are, as we hopefully begin this wonderful relationship”.

The Governor responded by telling Elder Munene that this project was very welcome in Machakos and reiterated that “It is very welcome, and we look forward to working with you on this one.”

Elder Munene went on to explain that another reason he was there was to see if there were other areas they could work on together, emphasizing the area of education.  The Governor spoke of all they are doing to help educate the children and youth in their community, and the care and concern she has for them, along with her to desire to partner with The Church in education, because she believes that education is “an equalizer” and she is very passionate about empowering the youth in her County.

After discussing other needs and possibilities for working together, Elder Munene explained, “That is why we are here today…  to understand your needs… and hopefully begin this wonderful relationship of how we can empower each other”.

Following the meeting Elder Munene presented Her Excellency with a Bible, Book of Mormon, and other Church materials, and plans were made for building upon this new friendship going forward in the future.
