In recent years, the government of Ghana passed a law mandating all high schools and technical institutes offer education free of charge, including boarding fees, meals and textbooks. The large influx of students taking advantage of the opportunity has overwhelmed the country’s educational system such that many schools lack basic equipment needed to educate the students.
Teshie Technical Institute has over 1,500 students, far beyond its capacity, so it rotates students between terms so that everyone has part of the year in a classroom. The school trains students in five areas: Food & Hospitality, Electrical Engineering, Woodworking, Sewing & Fashion Design, and Block Making & Cement Work. Currently, the only classes that have actual tools to practice with are the Food & Hospitality Class and the Sewing & Fashion Design class. The rest learn theory in class but have few or no tools to practice what they learn. A lack of student desks, chairs and tables in classrooms also makes learning challenging.
To support the instruction being offered, The Church donated a range of equipment, tools, and supplies to the Institute. Donated items include refrigerators and freezers, industrial blenders, rice cookers, solar panels, motors and transformers, a CNC lathe, surface planers and circular saws, laptop computers and projectors, chairs, desks, and much more.

In the handover ceremony, Mr. Benjamin Ayiku, the Member of parliament for the Ledzokuku Municipal District in Greater Accra, expressed gratitude to The Church for its efforts to support the school’s long-term vision of becoming a premier center of excellence in technical and vocational education in the country. He noted that The Church’s support falls in line with the government’s efforts at strengthening technical education. He, along with the school's principal, and others who spoke at the ceremony repeatedly thanked The Church for its donation, noting that it was not just a donation of material goods, but an investment in Ghana's future. Some expressed that the event marked a notable collaboration between faith-based organizations and educational institutions, reflecting the power of partnerships in driving national development goals.
Presiding at the event was President Jeffrey Nii Odai Botchway, Stake President of the Teshie Ghana Stake of The Church. As he stood up to address the audience, he first referenced the Savior’s words that “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these to my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). He then continued: “Our faith is not merely a creed to be recited or a set of doctrines to be intellectually affirmed. No, it is a living, breathing testament to the power of God’s love made manifest through tangible acts of kindness and true devotion to one another. It is about doing, about becoming, about transforming the very landscape of human experience one good deed at a time. I recall a sentiment often shared, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, who has taught us time and again that our Christianity must be evident not just in our words, but in our very actions—in the way we extend a helping hand, in the way we succor the weak, in the way we provide opportunity where none seemed to exist.”
While the donation addresses current needs, students, teachers, and administrators expressed their commitment to taking care of the donated equipment so that future students who attend in years to come will also enjoy the equipment as they learn skills needed for the job market.
