Groundbreaking for Antananarivo Madagascar Temple

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced today that the groundbreaking for the Antananarivo Madagascar will be Saturday, 15 March 2025. Elder Denelson Silva, First Counsellor in the Africa South Area Presidency will preside at the event. Attendance at the site will be by invitation only.

The temple site is located in Andranomena, next to the US Embassy on the route to the capital’s airport. It is temple number 261 and was announced on October 3, 2021.

Madagascar is an island nation off the east coast of Africa.  The temple, when complete, will remove the time and travel costs required for the Malagasy people to travel to a temple in another country.

Latter-day Saint temples differ from the Church’s meetinghouses or chapels where members meet for Sunday worship services. Temples are considered “houses of the Lord” where Christ's teachings are reaffirmed through marriage, baptism and other ordinances that unite families for eternity. In the temple, Church members learn more about the purpose of life and strengthen their commitment to serve Jesus Christ and those around them.
