Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Burundi donated mattresses, cleaning supplies, and food as part of the "Light the World" program on Saturday, December 23, 2023. This was at the Nezerwa Orphanage located north of the city of Bujumbura, in the Ntahangwa commune, Kinama zone, Carama 1 district. More than 317 people were involved, including orphans, members of the Church and friends, local authorities, and Scouts representing different churches.
The activity began at the orphanage at 1:15 p.m., and was led by the president of Bujumbura District, Jean Marie Bosco Ndikumana. The Bujumbura District Presidency and church members shared the joy by brightening the lives of the orphaned children of this Nezerwa Orphanage by offering them donations consisting of mattresses, food, and cleaning materials.
Capitoline Nzobonimpa of the Nezerwa Orphanage expressed her feelings of gratitude, specifying that she was very happy with these donations because there were children who slept in poor conditions, but that the donations from the Church of Jesus Christ came as a cure.
She was followed by the District Chief, Alexis Nizigiyimana, who sincerely thanked the Church and used biblical scripture, found in James 2:26, to explain that faith without works is dead. He added that if this gesture of love were also made to others in difficulty, not only would the country benefit but it would also enlighten the whole world. He concluded his remarks by inviting other churches to follow this example.
After this event, all the participants headed the Bujumbura 3 branch building, where there were musical presentations and games from the different members of the Church, hymns performed by the district choir and songs and dances presented by the Scouts. The activity ended at 4:30 p.m., after sharing refreshments with all participants.
