On December 23, 2023, members of the Ngaliema and Lukunga Stakes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated bedding, furnishings, food, household items, and basic supplies to an orphanage and a health center in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The members came to help orphans and others living in difficult conditions. This service was part of the Light the World program during Christmastime.
Adrien Kaniki, from the Ngaliema Stake presidency, said during the handover ceremony at the Imani orphanage, “We must all show brotherly kindness towards everyone, including all religious denominations.” Referring to the Bible verse in James 1:27, he added, “Pure religion and undefiled before God is to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, which The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints not only carries out during its Light the World program, but also throughout the year.”
Mrs. Christine Mauwa, head of the orphanage, responded: “In these times when fewer and fewer people are interested in supporting us, we are delighted that your church thought of us. God bless you!”
On the same day, leaders of the Lukunga Stake delivered supplies to the Liberata Medical Center in the Mont-Ngafula neighborhood of Kinshasa. The head of the Kimbwala District, Madame Henriette, the Kimbwala police captain, and the head doctor of the health center, Dr. Patrick, were also present.
During the handover ceremony, Dr. Patrick said, “we are very happy with the materials you have provided, because we really want to light the world by providing effective and quality care to the people. We sincerely thank you and ask God to bless you and your church.”
The police captain said, “We lack the words to express how grateful we are to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and we know that the Lord will repay you.”
