Approximately 600 households affected by the torrential rains that fell on the town of Kananga in the Democratic Republic of Congo in December 2023 received assistance from the NGO Sowers of Hope Congo with substantial funding from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The aid distribution took place on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at the Stade de Cheminots stadium in Kananga in the presence of civic authorities and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Each aid kit was composed of corn flour, sleeping mats, clothing, vegetable oil, beans, rice, kitchen utensils and other food and non-food items. All this was an expression of the love that Church members have towards their fellow citizens who lost so much during this natural disaster that struck all the city of Kananga.
During various remarks at the distribution ceremony, representatives of the mayor of Kananga as well as the recipients warmly welcomed this assistance, which follows that of the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Civic leaders also invited the Church of Jesus Christ to also assist other flooding victims.
Elder Willy Binene, Africa Central Area Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said, “We are all sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father. Therefore, we cannot remain indifferent to this suffering. The members of this community are our brothers and sisters.”
He added that, “Charity is the pure love of Christ that motivates us to help our brothers and sisters.”
Twenty-six people lost their lives during the rains of December 26, 2023 in the city of Kananga. The flooding caused much erosion and great damage to buildings and infrastructure.
