Sierra Leone Stakes Launch Strengthening Marriages Classes

Pilot Rolled Out for Local Priesthood Leaders

The Wellington Sierra Leone Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is taking a bold step to strengthen marriages and families with the launch of its first Strengthening Marriages Classes. The inaugural session began on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the Wellington Sierra Leone Stake Center in Freetown.

These pilot classes are designed specifically for priesthood leaders, particularly members of the stake presidency and bishoprics. The goal is to equip these leaders with valuable insights and tools on strengthening marriages and families, which they can later replicate within their respective wards and branches for the benefit of the wider membership.

Held every Saturday at 5:00 p.m., each class will run for two hours. This initiative addresses an urgent and important need. President Gordon B. Hinckley once observed the global erosion of family structures, noting, “Perhaps our greatest concern is with families. The family is falling apart all over the world. The old ties that bound together father and mother and children are breaking everywhere.” He emphasized the deep pain that results from broken homes, a reality the Wellington Sierra Leone Stake aims to mitigate.

Similar training was also conducted in the Bo East Stake. The training brought together stake presidency members and their wives, bishopric and branch presidencies and their wives. The same training will be rolled out for members in the wards and branch of that stake as well.

The Church teaches that the marriage covenant offers the highest possibility for peace and happiness in this life and eternal joy in the world to come. However, maintaining a strong and enduring relationship requires significant effort, as many couples face serious challenges in their marriages. With this in mind, the Wellington Stake has launched this initiative to ensure its leaders are well-prepared to support and guide families in strengthening their marriages.

Through these weekly classes, the stakes hope to foster lasting and fulfilling relationships that will not only benefit individuals but also contribute to the overall strength of the local and global Church community.
